About the Lab

The Applied AI Systems & Reliability Lab exists to advance safe, reliable, and cost-conscious AI system design for small and regulated organizations.

Mission

We conduct applied research, document our methods and findings, and maintain a strict structural separation between research and commercial production. The Lab creates knowledge; commercial entities create products.

Scope

  • In scope: Evaluation frameworks, reliability testing methodologies, governance and safety considerations, deployment constraints for resource-limited and compliance-heavy environments, and mentorship of early-career researchers.
  • Out of scope: Operating production systems, providing client services, or substituting for commercial engineering.

Principles

  • Research-first — All Lab activity is structured as research with documented outputs. We do not perform unpaid R&D for commercial entities.
  • Firewall — Fellows and staff do not access client environments, commercial production systems, or proprietary commercial datasets in violation of the Firewall Policy.
  • Publish-first, license optionally — We aim to publish findings and methods. The Lab may license IP under formal agreements; fellows are not involved in commercial licensing.

Leadership

Chris Morancie is Director of the Applied AI Systems & Reliability Lab. He is an AI Systems Architect and applied research leader focused on the design, evaluation, and governance of production-grade AI systems in regulated and operationally constrained environments.

His work spans more than 15 years across healthcare, financial services, logistics, legal, and mid-market operations—leading the architecture of cloud-native systems, workflow automation platforms, and AI-enabled decision infrastructures. His core thesis: AI must be engineered as a system—observable, permissioned, testable, and economically bounded—rather than deployed as isolated model integrations.

As Director, Chris oversees research strategy, fellowship design, governance enforcement, and publication standards. The Lab’s work advances applied frameworks for:

  • Reliability patterns in AI-assisted systems
  • Deterministic workflow orchestration with bounded reasoning
  • Observability and replay testing for model-driven processes
  • Memory-backed architectures and structured evaluation
  • Cost-aware infrastructure design
  • Governance models for responsible deployment in regulated environments

In parallel with research leadership, Chris advises executive teams on the safe and scalable implementation of AI systems in production, with emphasis on auditability, privacy controls, and operational resilience. The Lab formalizes his long-standing commitment to publishing applied research that bridges theory and deployment realities for small businesses and regulated industries.

Chris holds an MBA from the University of Tampa and maintains professional certifications in cloud architecture, AI, databases, continuous improvement, product ownership, and systems design.

Governance

The Lab is governed by the Research Charter (v1.0), Publication & Independence Policy, Conflict of Interest Policy, and Firewall Policy. Full policies are summarized on the Governance & Policies page.
